May: The Way to Global MethodismBy Keith Boyette |
Through Isaiah, God declares, “O Jerusalem, I have posted watchmen on your walls; they will pray day and night, continually. Take no rest, all you who pray to the Lord. Give the Lord no rest until he completes his work ….” (Isaiah 62:6 NLT). You are the watchmen God has posted on the walls of the Global Methodist Church. Your prayers avail much. They are powerful, declaring our utter dependence on Jesus to build the church. As the psalmist writes, “Unless the Lord builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted.” (Psalm 127:1 NLT).
The Global Methodist Church is one year old. Fueled by your fervent prayers, much has already been accomplished, but much remains to be done. God is building a church with a vision of multiplication so that more and more people come to know Jesus, become his disciples, are transformed by the Holy Spirit, and worship passionately, love extravagantly, and witness boldly. As we consider what God has already accomplished, we praise God, celebrate, and give thanks. It is important that we remember the mighty acts of God because what God has begun, he will complete. We need God’s design, his means, and his ways to be established in us. We need God’s protection to ensure we remain true to his calling upon us. We need God’s provision, spiritually and materially. We dare not take the next step unless God guides and directs. In the first year, more than 1700 churches have become members of the Global Methodist Church; more than 2350 clergy have joined us in fulfilling the call of God. Many more long to complete their journey to be part of this new work of God. With Paul, we desire to focus on one thing: “Forgetting the past and looking to what lies ahead, [let us] press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus is calling us.” (Philippians 3:13-14 NLT). A Suggested Pattern of Prayer As you pray through the following prayer points, invite the presence of the Lord into your time of prayer. Each day’s prompt has a Scripture reference for you to pray through. As you pray also allow time to listen to what the Holy Spirit is saying to you. When you have prayed through the Scripture and prayer point, you may be led to add your own prayers. Pray and consider what action steps you might take in response to the Lord’s leading. Repeat this prayer pattern weekly for the month. Prayer points: Sunday: Give thanks for what God has accomplished in the first year of the Global Methodist Church. (Ephesians 5:20) Monday: Give thanks for the many servants who have been our partners in the Global Methodist Church in spreading the Good News about Christ. (Philippians 1:5) Tuesday: Pray for the Transitional Leadership Council, the staff of the general Church, the leadership of our provisional annual conferences, the leadership of our Transitional Conference Advisory Teams, and others who are building on the foundation established by Jesus. (1 Corinthians 3:10-11) Wednesday: Pray for God to make a way for brothers and sisters in Christ in Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe who desire to be part of God’s mission through the Global Methodist Church to overcome obstacles and to walk in the way God is establishing. (Isaiah 40:3-5) Thursday: Pray that each member of the Global Methodist Church would be filled with spiritual wisdom and insight so that we might grow in our knowledge of God. (Ephesians 1:17) Friday: Pray that God would send more workers into his fields through the Global Methodist Church so that more and more people come to know Jesus, become his disciples, are transformed by the Holy Spirit, and worship passionately, love extravagantly, and witness boldly. (Matthew 9:37-38) Saturday: Pray for God to bring to completion the good work he has begun in and through the Global Methodist Church. (Isaiah 62:6) For since the world began, no ear has heard, and no eye has seen a God like you, who works for those who wait for him! (Isaiah 64:4 NLT)
