The mission of The United Methodist Church is to “Make Disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the World.” And as such, that is our mission at The Fount. I’m grateful that the General Conference of the UMC has identified this simple, yet powerful mission statement and am happy to adopt it because that is essentially what the Church of Jesus Christ is all about. But what does it mean?
It means that all of us are to be about this business: making disciples of Jesus Christ. Because God uses Christian disciples to transform the world!
Our “job” is to: (1) Lead people to faith in Jesus Christ (conversion), and then (2) to walk with them as they grow in grace, helping (discipling) them to grow and become stronger followers of Jesus. Sometimes I use the word “mentoring”, but it is really “discipling”.
God calls each of us to be in ministry. It isn’t just the pastor’s job, or the church staff’s job to be in ministry. All of us are to be involved in ministering to others. Each of us needs to discover our gifts for ministry (spiritual gifts) and then to discern God’s call on our lives. I believe the church’s job is to equip and empower its members to engage in the ministries to which God has called them.
What are your gifts? To what has God called you? And who are you discipling? If you don’t know the answers to these questions, I want to invite you to pray and seek God’s heart. and I want to help you to find the answers.
Blessings,
Pastor Glen
