Why Did We Change Our Name?

On Father’s Day, we officially changed our name to “The Fount.” The initial reaction to the change is varied, but always interesting! Some immediately say, “I like it!”  While others, with confused look, say, “Why did you change it to that?”  One woman wrote on Facebook that it looked to her like we had started to write “Fountain” and just stopped before finishing the word!  But “fount” is just another form of the word “fountain” and we chose it because it is unique, but it keeps us grounded in where we are and to Whom we belong.

I gave a sermon on Father’s Day explaining the reasoning and process of changing our name. You can still listen to the sermon by going to our website (http://TheFount.Church) and clicking on “Sermons” at the top of any page. Scroll down to June 19th and listen to the sermon titled “The Fount.”

Here are some points that you can mention to anyone who asks:

  1. Denominational names confuse people and distract them from considering a church
  2. The Fount is a symbolic title for Jesus, as in “Come, Thou Fount of every blessing”
  3. It means “the source” from which we receive the Living Water, and to which we return to be refreshed and renewed
  4. In the Bible whenever a name is changed it signifies a redefinition of mission, e.g. Abram (exalted father) became Abraham (father to a multitude)
  5. A new name gives us a new opportunity to invite new people

There is a new wind blowing, a new stream bubbling up from God’s gracious abundance. We are The Fount, a United Methodist Community, seeking to reach people with the life-giving waters of salvation and sanctification!

Abundant Blessings,

Pastor Glen
