On Father\u2019s Day, we officially changed our name to \u201cThe Fount.\u201d The initial reaction to the change is varied, but always interesting! Some immediately say, \u201cI like it!\u201d\u00a0 While others, with confused look, say, \u201cWhy did you change it to that?\u201d\u00a0 One woman wrote on Facebook that it looked to her like we had started to write \u201cFountain\u201d and just stopped before finishing the word!\u00a0 But \u201cfount\u201d is just another form of the word \u201cfountain\u201d and we chose it because it is unique, but it keeps us grounded in where we are and to Whom we belong.<\/p>\n

I gave a sermon on Father\u2019s Day explaining the reasoning and process of changing our name. Here are some points that you can mention to anyone who asks:<\/p>\n

  1. Denominational names confuse people and distract them from\u00a0considering a church<\/li>\n
  2. The Fount is a symbolic title for Jesus, as in \u201cCome, Thou Fount of every blessing\u201d<\/li>\n
  3. It means \u201cthe source\u201d from which we receive the Living Water, and to which we return to be refreshed and renewed<\/li>\n
  4. In the Bible whenever a name is changed it signifies a redefinition of mission, e.g. Abram (exalted father) became Abraham (father to a multitude)<\/li>\n
  5. A new name gives us a new opportunity to invite new people<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    There is a new wind blowing, a new stream bubbling up from God\u2019s gracious abundance. We are The Fount, a United Methodist Community, seeking to reach people with the life-giving waters of salvation and sanctification!<\/p>\n
